Judith Sayers, from Sion Mills just outside of Strabane, was diagnosed with
Leukaemia three years ago when she was just sixteen years old. Since then Judith
has received several intensive courses of Chemotherapy in Belfast City Hospital.
In addition to this treatment Judith will now need a bone marrow transplant. The
transplant could have been scheduled for Belfast City Hospital if an immediate
family member matched as a suitable donor, but unfortunately this is not the
case and due to hospital policy extended family members can not be tested.
Ironically Judith has fifteen eligible cousins all in the highly compatible
category (Males under 40 years) that can not be tested for suitability. This
sadly means that Judith is currently on a waiting list known as the ’All Ireland
Donor Bank’ where she awaits news on a daily basis of a prospective donor match.
When this match is made Judith will have to travel to Dublin for the transplant
procedure, and is likely to have to stay in Dublin for anything up to 6 months
depending on how she responds to treatment.
